About The Ned Hotel
In the heart of London, in the historic old headquarters of Midland Bank, sits the opulent 250-room Ned Hotel. Belonging to the esteemed SOHO House Group, this architectural marvel combines the grace of the 1920s with contemporary conveniences, all the while conjuring up the glitz of the Edwardian period.
The Challenge
One of the special challenges faced by SOHO House Group when transforming the Midland Bank building into The Ned was keeping the hotel's 1920s Edwardian design, which included accessible restrooms. The project called for adaptable inclusive bathroom solutions that complied with all accessibility laws, including the UK's Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), while blending in well with the unique design of the hotel.
The Solution
Fitzroy of London worked closely with SOHO House Group to develop bespoke products from our Portland Collection, a range that perfectly captures the timeless charm of the Edwardian era. Our in-house designers and engineers put their skills to work, crafting each piece with meticulous attention to detail.
Made from solid brass and designed to celebrate the style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Portland Collection offers products that are both classical and historical and includes fixtures in finishes like polished nickel, antique brass, and polished brass. These custom solutions ensured that the accessible bathrooms functioned while adhering to the hotel's elegant, modern, and minimalistic look. They also improved the opulent atmosphere of The Ned's interiors.
The Result
The Ned Hotel’s stylish accessible bathrooms set a new standard for luxury hotels around the world. The bathrooms designed by Fitzroy of London received widespread praise for blending historical elegance with modern accessibility. The accessible washrooms became a standout feature, attracting guests looking for an inclusive yet luxurious experience.
The project’s success was further confirmed when The Ned won multiple design awards, including recognition for its state-of-the-art accessible facilities—an accomplishment once thought nearly impossible in a building with such historical character.
Value to the Customer
The partnership between Fitzroy of London and SOHO House Group shows the value of working with a provider that understands both the aesthetic and functional needs of a project. By selecting Fitzroy of London, SOHO House Group improved the reputation of their brand, which increased reservations and increased return on investment, in addition to realising their vision of a completely inclusive and design-consistent hotel.
The Ned’s eclectic blend of luxury and accessibility has redefined expectations for stylish accessible bathrooms in the hospitality industry. Our collaboration with SOHO House Group demonstrated that no design challenge is too complex when combining classical design with innovative, functional solutions.
