Understanding Doc M, Everything You Need to Know

Designing accessible washrooms for public and commercial buildings requires a thorough understanding of Doc M regulations to ensure compliance with UK accessibility standards. Below, we explore key requirements, design principles, and best practices for creating fully compliant, inclusive washrooms.

What is a Doc M Pack?

A Doc M Pack is a pre-configured set of fixtures and fittings designed to create a fully compliant accessible washroom. Required under Building Regulations Part M, these packs support users with mobility challenges, ensuring safe and dignified use. They are essential for public and commercial buildings aiming to provide inclusive facilities.

Under the 2010 Equality Act, every building open to the public (including employees) must "make any reasonable adjustment to any physical feature which might put a disabled person at a substantial disadvantage compared to a non-disabled person." Part M of the Building Regulations 2010 (often referred to as Doc M pack) sets out the guidelines designers should follow to meet the requirements of the Equality Act.

Public and commercial properties vary according to purpose, design, and size. Therefore, there is no "one size fits all" solution for a Doc M pack. Doc M pack guidelines should be used alongside other relevant guidelines to establish the specification, size, and quantity of accessible toilets appropriate for each building. These include BS 6465 (Scale of Provision) and BS 8300-2:2018 (Design of an Accessible and Inclusive Built Environment).
